\nElle reprend, \u00e0 sa fa\u00e7on, l\u2019imbroglio cr\u00e9\u00e9 par la compromission du mariage de Clarisse et de Silvio \u2013 Les enfants du marchand Pantalon et du docteur Lombardi – par l\u2019annonce par Arlequin de la pr\u00e9sence de son ma\u00eetre Federico, initialement promis \u00e0 Clarisse et consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme mort. Federico, par ailleurs, est sa s\u0153ur B\u00e9atrice d\u00e9guis\u00e9e en homme , \u00e0 la recherche de son amant Florindo, accus\u00e9 du meurtre de Federico.
\nCette situation se compliquera du fait qu\u2019Arlequin, serviteur de B\u00e9atrice, entrera au service de Florindo. Il s\u2019ensuivra une s\u00e9rie de quiproquos et de revirements qui provoqueront le rire et feront l\u2019essence du th\u00e9\u00e2tre comique.
\nCette pi\u00e8ce est \u00e9galement une page de critique sociale qui \u00e9voque le sort des femmes et des domestiques, dont la th\u00e9matique demeure d\u2019actualit\u00e9.
