Elle est une critique de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 politique et sociale des soci\u00e9t\u00e9s arabes, une critique acerbe dans la mesure o\u00f9 elle se veut d\u00e9nonciatrice, mais intelligemment masqu\u00e9e sous forme de conte.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Soltan el-Hayer<\/strong> raconte l\u2019histoire d\u2019un monarque Mamluk dont une rumeur court dans tout le royaume et au sein m\u00eame de sa cour, pr\u00e9tendant que le sultan, imbu de son statut royal, n\u2019a ni le droit ni le devoir de gouverner ses sujets \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 que c\u2019est un ancien esclave non\u00a0 affranchi. Le sultan est s\u00e9rieusement embarrass\u00e9\u00a0: faut-il, pour gouverner, avoir recours \u00e0 la r\u00e9pression ou \u00e0 la force de la loi\u00a0? Pour se r\u00e9habiliter, l\u00e9gitimer son r\u00e8gne et asseoir sa royaut\u00e9, le roi refuse de s\u2019imposer par l\u2019\u00e9p\u00e9e, mais pr\u00e9f\u00e8re la justice. Il va s\u2019offrir aux ench\u00e8res au march\u00e9 des esclaves comme lui a conseill\u00e9 le Cadi (le juge) dans l\u2019espoir de se voir affranchir. Une femme tr\u00e8s riche, soup\u00e7onn\u00e9e femme de mauvaise, l\u2019ach\u00e8te, \u00e0 condition qu\u2019elle le lib\u00e8re apr\u00e8s la pri\u00e8re d\u2019Al-Jar. Les p\u00e9rip\u00e9ties commencent. Au cours de la discussion, il s\u2019av\u00e8re qu\u2019on s\u2019est tromp\u00e9 sur le compte de cette femme, qui s\u2019est av\u00e9r\u00e9e une femme musulmane pratiquante, tr\u00e8s cultiv\u00e9e et \u00e9mancip\u00e9e. Apr\u00e8s la pri\u00e8re d\u2019Al-Jar, elle tient sa promesse et le lib\u00e8re. Le dilemme est r\u00e9solu \u00e0 la fin du r\u00e9cit.
