Issu d\u2019une famille ais\u00e9e, Apul\u00e9e s\u2019initie \u00e0 l\u2019art de la rh\u00e9torique \u00e0 Carthage. Il voyage ,ensuite, et compl\u00e8te sa formation en se rendant \u00e0 Rome o\u00f9 il \u00e9tudie le droit et la litt\u00e9rature et ,\u00e0 Ath\u00e8nes o\u00f9 il se familiarise avec la langue et la philosophie grecques. L\u00e0 il s\u2019ouvre aux myst\u00e8res religieux et \u00e0 la magie, une qu\u00eate qu\u2019il poursuivra en Asie mineure. De retour en Afrique, ce brillant touche-\u00e0-tout (musique, astronomie, m\u00e9decine) s\u2019\u00e9tablit \u00e0 Carthage o\u00f9 il fut un rh\u00e9teur de grande notori\u00e9t\u00e9.
